Summary
- Algorithm cuts SSD pre-conditioning from days to hours.
- SPRandom completes drive prep in 6.5 hours, saving 95% time.
- Open-sourced algorithm benefits data centers and AI workloads.

SanDisk has introduced SPRandom, an open-sourced algorithm that significantly accelerates the pre-conditioning process for Solid-State Drives (SSDs). This new method drastically reduces the time needed to prepare drives for stable operation, from over 160 hours down to approximately 6.5 hours.
Traditional pre-conditioning involved multiple drive writes, taking up to 10.5 days for larger drives. SPRandom achieves steady-state performance with just one complete drive write pass, cutting preparation time by as much as 97.4%.
The algorithm divides the drive into sections with variable over-provisioning. It calculates how this distribution ensures steady-state performance after pre-conditioning. SPRandom has been released as an extension to the FIO tool, making it accessible to the entire storage industry.
This advancement is particularly crucial for hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure, where rapid deployment and consistent storage performance are vital. While the benefits are substantial for large-scale operations, the average consumer’s experience with a gaming PC will not be notably affected.
