SanDisk Unveils Next-Gen NAND Chip: 512TB SSDs by 2027!
12 Jul
Summary
- New BiCS10 chip achieves 29Gb per square millimetre density.
- Expect 256TB SSDs in 2026 and 512TB drives by 2027.
- Competitors are also racing toward similar high-capacity milestones.

SanDisk, in partnership with Kioxia, has begun sampling its 10th-generation 3D NAND flash chip, BiCS10. This new chip achieves an area bit density exceeding 29Gb per square millimetre, a 59% increase over its predecessor. The BiCS10 also features enhanced interface speeds, reaching up to 4.8Gb/s, representing a 33% improvement.
These technological advancements pave the way for unprecedented storage capacities. SanDisk has outlined a roadmap targeting a 256TB SSD for 2026 and a remarkable 512TB drive by 2027. The company is also considering a 1PB data center drive in the future, with a strategic shift towards QLC memory for capacity-focused products by 2028.
The competitive landscape is heating up, with Kioxia, Samsung, Solidigm, and Micron all pursuing similar high-capacity storage milestones. Samsung, for instance, plans a 512TB PCIe 6.0 drive around 2027. The current tight NAND supply, driven by generative AI infrastructure demand, is expected to keep prices elevated.
