Samsung's Clever 3D Display Tech Returns

Samsung, in collaboration with POSTECH, has engineered a novel light-field display capable of switching between 2D and glasses-free 3D. This advanced screen uses a "metasurface lenticular lens" with "nanoscale structures" to achieve seamless transitions, addressing limitations of previous light-field displays such as bulkiness and narrow viewing angles. The technology functions by mimicking natural light, enabling a true glasses-free stereoscopic experience without a fixed "sweet spot."

The metasurface lens, only 1.2mm thick, can alter its focal properties with a voltage change, currently providing viewing angles up to 100 degrees. While this innovation is significant, its initial commercial applications are not anticipated for home televisions. Instead, the technology is more likely to debut in smaller devices like smartphones or tablets, or in business-to-business contexts such as retail displays.
