Summary
- Samsung introduced new AI memory tech with over 400 layers.
- BV-NAND boosts density by 58% and improves performance.
- Wafer-bonding tech promises 10x density and triple efficiency.

Samsung Electronics has introduced its latest artificial intelligence memory technology, aiming to strengthen its leadership in the AI market. The company unveiled a prototype called V10 Bonding V-NAND, or BV-NAND, at the Future of Memory and Storage conference.
This new chip boasts over 400 layers and a novel wafer-bonding architecture. It offers a 58% increase in memory density and improved performance metrics for reading, writing, and input/output operations. These enhancements are designed to meet the growing need for high-capacity and power-efficient NAND memory as AI workloads expand.
Samsung also presented concepts for zHBM and zNAND-O architecture, envisioning 3D memory that stacks cells vertically. Unlike conventional memory placed beside processors, Samsung's zHBM stacks memory above AI accelerators, reducing data travel distance for increased bandwidth and energy efficiency.
This wafer-bonding technology could achieve more than 10 times the memory density of current HBM5 memory. It also aims for triple the energy efficiency and a significant reduction in thermal resistance. Analysts note strong AI demand, with Samsung securing long-term agreements that could account for a substantial portion of its future memory sales.
