Samsung Messages Sunset: Act Before July!
31 May
Summary
- Samsung Messages app will stop functioning for US users in July 2026.
- Unmigrated text history will be lost when the app is deactivated.
- Newer Galaxy Watches (WearOS) retain full conversation history.

Samsung users in the US face a critical deadline in July 2026 as the Samsung Messages app will stop functioning. Failure to migrate text history to Google Messages before this date means losing years of conversations. Samsung has begun guiding users towards Google Messages, offering instructions for various Android versions and promoting its enhanced features.
Google Messages provides advanced capabilities such as RCS for improved messaging, AI-powered spam filters, and multi-device access. While Samsung phased out its own app as the default in 2021 and stopped pre-installing it recently, this July cutoff marks a hard end for its functionality. Users on Android 11 and older are also advised to switch.
This transition impacts older Galaxy Watch models running Tizen, which will lose access to complete conversation history. In contrast, newer Galaxy Watches operating on WearOS will maintain full access to messages. Only emergency service communication will remain functional on Samsung Messages after its deactivation.
