Samsung Ditches Own Messaging App in July
14 Apr
Summary
- Samsung Messages app will be discontinued in July.
- Google Messages offers RCS support and Gemini features.
- Older Galaxy Watches may lose message history access.

Samsung will cease support for its Samsung Messages application in July. Users on Galaxy phones that do not have Google Messages as the default app are advised to migrate. Google Messages has been the default since the Galaxy S21 series, and older Android versions will continue to receive support for Samsung Messages.
Users needing to switch can download Google Messages and set it as the default SMS application through prompts or phone settings. A key advantage of Google Messages is its support for RCS (Rich Communication Services) and integration with Gemini features, including smart replies and photo remixing.
This discontinuation may affect older Tizen OS-based smartwatches, such as the Galaxy Watch 3 and earlier. These devices will still allow sending and receiving texts but may lose full message conversation history visibility after Samsung Messages is retired.
