Samsung Faces Component Shortage for Fold 8
1 Sep
Summary
- Fold 8 demand exceeds Samsung's production capacity.
- Display driver ICs are a critical component bottleneck.
- Samsung will use chips reserved for next year's models.

Samsung's new passport-style foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, released in July, is experiencing demand that has surpassed initial expectations. The company is now facing significant production constraints due to a limited supply of a key component.
The bottleneck centers on display driver ICs (DDIs), which control screen brightness and color. These custom-made chips, supplied by Taiwanese firm UMC, have a production and shipping time of up to four months. UMC has reportedly informed Samsung that it cannot fulfill the accelerated orders needed to meet the Fold 8's popularity.
To address the shortage, Samsung is now planning to utilize DDIs that were originally allocated for its 2027 foldable models. This strategic shift indicates a potential impact on the availability of future devices, prioritizing the current popular model's supply chain.
Despite these production hurdles, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 remains available for purchase. The device has garnered positive reviews, with praise for its design, battery life, performance, and AI features. Meanwhile, Apple is anticipated to launch a foldable iPhone with a similar form factor soon.
