Exploding Batteries: Can We Stop Them?
28 Oct
Summary
- Thousands of lithium battery incidents occur annually worldwide.
- Incidents include fires, leaks, and explosions causing injuries and deaths.
- New companies are developing safer lithium battery technologies.

Lithium batteries, indispensable for everyday electronics, present a growing safety concern. Annually, thousands of incidents involving these batteries are reported worldwide, ranging from overheating and leaks to dangerous ignitions. These incidents have tragically resulted in fatalities and significant property damage, as seen in recent events such as a factory fire in South Korea in 2024 and a blaze at an e-bike shop near New York City in 2023.
Data from UL Solutions indicates approximately 75 global incidents per week in 2024, totaling nearly 4,000. The Federal Aviation Administration also reports a consistent number of aviation-related incidents. Despite enhanced restrictions from airlines and safety organizations over the past decade, these battery-related dangers have unfortunately continued and even increased.
In response to these persistent risks, several companies have begun developing and marketing innovative, safer lithium battery technologies. This progress offers a hopeful outlook for mitigating the dangers associated with powering our increasingly connected world.
