Russia is positioning its homegrown artificial intelligence, dubbed "sovereign AI," as an attractive alternative for Global South nations. According to Sberbank executive Alexander Vedyakhin, these countries are seeking AI models trained on local content and aligned with their distinct values, moving away from concerns about privacy and content in Western AI offerings. This initiative aims to help emerging economies leverage AI technology and potentially bypass developmental hurdles.
Sberbank and IT giant Yandex are reportedly working to close the gap with leading AI developers in the U.S. and China through their flagship models, GigaChat and YandexGPT. Vedyakhin indicated that while these models might initially be less advanced than global competitors, their focus on local alignment is a key selling point for markets in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. He also noted a trend toward more compact, specialized AI models that efficiently address specific problems.
President Vladimir Putin has emphasized Russia's capability in developing homegrown AI for sensitive applications, including government and defense. The country is seeking to acquire advanced hardware, with Sberbank exploring the purchase of Chinese-made chips due to Western sanctions impacting access to U.S. technology. Vedyakhin acknowledged the dominance of U.S. chip maker Nvidia, particularly its CUDA software, as a significant factor in the AI industry's landscape.
