Russian Hackers Target US Infrastructure with AI

A Ukrainian woman faces federal charges for allegedly assisting Russian-backed cyberattacks aimed at U.S. critical infrastructure. The Department of Justice unsealed indictments revealing her ties to groups like CyberArmyofRussia_Reborn (CARR) and NoName057(16), which prosecutors claim advance Russia's geopolitical interests. These cyber operations have been linked to substantial real-world damage, including the contamination of public water supplies and the spoilage of thousands of pounds of meat products at a processing facility.

CARR, allegedly founded and funded by Russia's GRU, operated a large Telegram channel and caused extensive harm. NoName057(16), a hacktivist group, is responsible for over 1,500 attacks across various sectors in multiple countries, including government agencies, financial institutions, and transportation authorities. These groups are described as engaging in low-sophistication cyber activity for notoriety and disruption.

The State Department's Rewards for Justice program is offering up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest of other individuals associated with these pro-Russia hacking entities. Trials for the charged Ukrainian national are scheduled for February and April 2026, as the U.S. reiterates its commitment to defending essential services from malicious cyber activity.
