Summary
- Creator cited Fox News's influence as reason for removal.
- Roku licensing agreement was worth $60,000-$80,000 annually.
- Screensaver removal impacts users who found it grounding.

As of December 1, 2026, Roku OS users will no longer have access to the "Aquatic Life" screensaver, a feature available for a decade. The creator, Jim Sachs, has opted not to renew his licensing agreement with Roku following its acquisition by Fox for $22 billion.
Sachs, who developed the screensaver through his company SereneScreen, stated that his discomfort with Fox's business model, particularly its news and entertainment style, was the driving factor. He expressed concern that his artwork could be used to spread a philosophy he considers repugnant. The licensing deal provided Sachs with a significant portion of his income, amounting to $60,000 to $80,000 annually for exclusive rights.
Affected users will see their screensaver automatically switched to Roku's "Roku City" animation. Many users have voiced their disappointment online, with some describing the "Aquatic Life" screensaver as a vital tool for grounding and relaxation. Sachs has indicated that while he is open to restoring the license under different circumstances, he does not anticipate a change in Fox's business model.
Fans can still purchase the "Marine Aquarium" screensaver for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices. However, its return to the Roku platform appears unlikely.
