New Smart Glasses Boast 240Hz, But at What Cost?
15 May
Summary
- ROG Xreal R1 glasses offer a 240Hz refresh rate display.
- A special dock is required for the high refresh rate functionality.
- These glasses are priced higher than some competing models.

The ROG Xreal R1 smart glasses, a collaboration between Asus and Xreal, are scheduled for release in June. These display glasses boast a unique 240Hz micro-OLED refresh rate, a notable upgrade from the typical 120Hz found in competing devices. To harness this advanced refresh rate, the glasses must be connected to the ROG Control Dock, which includes two HDMI 2 ports and a DisplayPort 1.4 for seamless switching between PCs and game consoles.
While the ROG Xreal R1 offers a gamer-centric design and features like Bose-powered sound and dimmable electrochromic lenses, its 1920x1080 resolution and 700 nits brightness are similar to other display glasses. Competitors like the Viture Beast, priced at $549, offer higher resolution and brightness without a dedicated switching dock. The Xreal One Pro, at $599, is nearly identical, suggesting the ROG R1's dock adds approximately $250 to the cost. Xreal's Project Aura, expected later this year with Google, promises a wider 70-degree field of view, leaving the ROG Xreal R1's 57-degree field of view feeling somewhat limited.
Despite the technological advancements, the high price point makes the ROG Xreal R1 a challenging purchase for many consumers in the current economic climate. However, for users prioritizing a 240Hz display experience in smart glasses, these are currently the only option available.
