For the first time, Uber's annual Lost and Found Index now includes items left in robotaxis, as driverless cars become more common on its platform. Companies like Waymo, Motional, and Avride utilize Uber's network, contributing to this expansion. While robotaxis represent less than one percent of Uber's trips, the rate of forgotten items mirrors that of human-driven vehicles.
Predictably, phones are the most frequently abandoned items, followed by wallets, keys, and headphones. The index also highlights a collection of eccentric leftovers, including a unicorn Beanie Baby, a 15-pound bowling ball, a pair of dentures, and designer accessories from brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. Clothing items, such as cowboy hats and novelty Crocs, were also noted.
The process for retrieving lost items from robotaxis involves customers flagging the item in the app and communicating with support agents. Uber then dispatches a courier for a $15 fee or allows for depot pickup. This system is managed by Uber's new Autonomous Solutions program, as the company plans to expand AV trips to 15 global cities this year and aims to be the largest robotaxi broker by 2029.
Despite technological advancements, rider forgetfulness persists. In one instance, a Waymo vehicle was reported to have driven off with a passenger's luggage, though the issue was eventually resolved after media attention. This highlights ongoing challenges as autonomous vehicle integration grows.
