Roblox Enforces Stricter Age Tiers for Safer Play
13 Apr
Summary
- New age tiers aim to enhance child safety and parental controls.
- Roblox introduces 'Kids' and 'Select' accounts for minors.
- Platform updates respond to evolving global regulations on child access.

Roblox is enhancing its safety measures by introducing three distinct age tiers and expanded parental controls. These updates, set to begin in early June, are a direct response to increasing global regulations on child access to harmful content and past incidents involving youth safety online. The platform will now categorize users into 'Roblox Kids' for ages 5 to 8, 'Roblox Select' for ages 9 to 15, and 'Roblox' for those 16 and older. These new account types will feature distinct visual cues and tailored restrictions.
Users in the 'Kids' tier will have chat functionality disabled by default and will only access games with minimal content maturity labels. 'Select' accounts will see chat gradually introduced with safeguards, limited to games with moderate content maturity. These changes follow scrutiny over chat features, which have been linked to online grooming incidents. Roblox CEO David Baszucki emphasized the company's commitment to community well-being through proactive filtering, age-checks, and clear content ratings.
