Rivian has launched its "Universal Hands-Free" driving software for its second-generation R1 electric vehicles. The system requires continuous driver supervision and does not autonomously handle traffic signals or stop signs.
The new software substantially increases the capabilities previously offered, which were limited to 135,000 miles of highways. Rivian aims for its vehicles to achieve full autonomy within the next few years. The company is developing a dedicated autonomy computer with custom silicon for the R2 SUV, scheduled to debut in 2026, which will be crucial for enabling this future capability.
Beyond driver assistance, the update includes a new digital key feature for second-generation R1 owners, compatible with major smartphone digital wallets. Quad-motor variants also gain the "Kick Turn" function and customizable "RAD Tuner" drive modes. These advancements underscore Rivian's commitment to evolving its EV technology.
