- Android port supports third-party keyboards and apps.
- A YouTuber optimized the port due to device limitations.
The reMarkable Paper Pro, known for its e-ink display and stylus integration, can now operate on Android 13 thanks to a dedicated effort by YouTuber Chalid Raqami. This unofficial port overcomes the limitations of the tablet's proprietary Linux-based operating system, which previously restricted app availability.
The new Android 13 functionality brings notable improvements, including support for external Bluetooth keyboards and the ability to run popular applications such as Kindle and Microsoft OneNote, both fully compatible with the stylus. Users can even switch between Android 13 and the original OS at will.
Implementing Android on the reMarkable Paper Pro was a challenging endeavor due to the device's modest 2GB of RAM and quad-core processor. Raqami dedicated significant time to optimizing the build to mitigate performance issues, ensuring the tablet can handle one Android app at a time, though some graphical glitches and lag persist.
Raqami is working on a more accessible installation package for the Android port, aiming for a simpler release in the future. While currently not optimized for general use, early testers may have opportunities to assist in its refinement. An alternative for users seeking a fully-featured Android ereader is the Onyx Boox Go 7.
