Reddit is introducing a verification system, a move that brings a familiar checkmark to its platform. Initially, this feature is undergoing a limited alpha test with a curated group of high-visibility accounts, including journalists from major news outlets. This initiative aims to provide users with greater certainty about the identities of those they are engaging with, whether they are public figures, experts, or brands.

The verification process is designed to be voluntary and opt-in, focusing on adding clarity rather than conferring status. For businesses that already had an 'official' badge, this will be replaced with a grey 'verified' checkmark. Reddit emphasizes that verification does not offer perks like increased visibility or immunity from community rules. Accounts must be in good standing and actively used on the platform to be eligible.

Although users cannot currently apply for verification, Reddit has stated its intention to expand this capability. The goal is to eventually allow anyone who wishes to self-identify to do so. This cautious rollout reflects the complex nature of identity verification on social platforms, with Reddit prioritizing clarity and ease of moderation.
