New Android Malware Uses AI as a Weapon
22 Sep
Summary
- RatHat malware leverages AI for sophisticated device control.
- It infects devices via social engineering and fake app downloads.
- Factory reset is the only known way to remove the malware.

A newly identified strain of Android malware, dubbed RatHat, has emerged and is attributed to threat actors based in China.
This malware uniquely employs artificial intelligence, granting an AI assistant extensive control over the device's accessibility features. Unlike traditional malware that follows fixed scripts, RatHat uses AI to adapt in real-time, navigating and interacting with the device interface dynamically.
Infection typically begins through social engineering, where users are tricked into downloading seemingly legitimate applications from fake websites that mimic the Google Play Store. Once the malware is installed and requests accessibility permissions, it activates Wireless Debugging.
This feature allows RatHat to capture text messages, create overlays on apps to steal passwords and multi-factor authentication codes, and record user touch inputs. Due to its adaptive nature and AI-driven operations, RatHat is particularly difficult for security software to detect. The only effective method to remove RatHat once it has infected a device is to perform a factory reset.
