RAM Shortage: AI Devours Memory, Tech Faces Scarcity
12 Feb
Summary
- AI's insatiable RAM demand will cause widespread device shortages.
- Manufacturers like Dell and Asus have stockpiled memory.
- HP considers renting laptops to circumvent the RAM crisis.

A significant shortage of RAM is anticipated to impact the technology sector, driven by the escalating memory demands of artificial intelligence development. Initial predictions suggested shortages could persist until 2028, a timeline established by industry leaders from major RAM manufacturers. However, recent analyses indicate AI infrastructure investment is expanding rapidly, while global DRAM production capacity is projected to grow at a modest annual rate of 4.8% through 2030.
This constrained capacity is expected to concentrate on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), further limiting supply for legacy and specialized DRAM. Consequently, a sustained DRAM scarcity may become the new norm. While many companies, including Dell and Asus, have preemptively stockpiled memory, these reserves are finite. Even major players like Apple anticipate a greater impact, and Samsung's internal mobile division has reportedly struggled to secure favorable contracts from its own RAM division.
In response, companies are seeking alternative solutions. Acer is investigating multiple smaller vendors to mitigate reliance on the dominant Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, who collectively control 95% of the market. These efforts include looking towards Chinese providers like CXMT and YMTC. In a notable strategy, HP is reportedly considering a plan to rent laptops, enabling consumers to acquire devices despite the ongoing RAM crisis, though this would likely result in long-term overpayment without eventual ownership.
