21 Nov
Summary
- Microsoft's PowerToys now uses on-device AI for Advanced Paste.
- New update allows local AI models via Foundry Local or Ollama.
- Users can translate and summarize text without cloud costs.

Microsoft has significantly enhanced the Advanced Paste feature in PowerToys for Windows 11, integrating on-device artificial intelligence. The latest 0.96 update enables users to process copied text using local AI models, running directly on their device's Neural Processing Unit (NPU) through tools like Foundry Local or the open-source Ollama.
This advancement means that features such as AI-powered translation and summarization of clipboard content can be performed locally. Consequently, users benefit from cost savings as API credits are no longer required for these operations, and their data remains on their personal device, ensuring greater privacy.
The updated Advanced Paste tool also broadens its compatibility, now supporting a wider array of online models including Azure OpenAI, Gemini, and Mistral, in addition to its previous OpenAI support. A refined user interface now displays current clipboard content and offers a convenient model selection dropdown.
