Sony Confirms AI Frame Generation for PlayStation
21 Mar
Summary
- AI frame generation is coming to PlayStation platforms.
- This technology uses AI to create smoother perceived game visuals.
- Future consoles like the PS6 are expected to feature this capability.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect for PlayStation consoles, has confirmed that AI-based frame generation technology is on its way to PlayStation platforms. This advanced technique will utilize artificial intelligence to create intermediate frames that the console can render, thereby enhancing the perceived smoothness of game visuals. This technology, sometimes critiqued on PCs as 'fake frames,' is known to introduce a degree of lag.
It remains unclear if this feature will be implemented on the upcoming PS5 Pro, which recently received an upgraded AI upscaling technique, or if it will be reserved for a future console like the PS6. Sony has previously suggested the PS6 might not launch before 2027, aligning with the potential arrival of this ML-based frame generation. The current PS5 console already supports AMD's FSR3 frame generation in select games, but this existing implementation does not incorporate machine learning.
Industry experts from Nvidia and AMD typically caution that frame generation is not a solution for fundamentally low frame rates; a stable base framerate is usually required for the technique to be effective. Cerny indicated that no further releases are planned for the current year, with more details expected in the future.
