Pixel Watch 5: Subtlety reigns, but value questioned

The Pixel Watch 5 has arrived, maintaining its predecessor's appealing design while introducing subtle enhancements. Under the hood, it boasts an upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor, promising a 12% CPU performance increase, alongside doubled storage to 64GB and 3GB of RAM. These upgrades are intended to support features like offline Gemini and improved health tracking.

The device is now available for preorder, launching in stores on August 20, 2026. Despite a slightly larger battery, real-world testing indicates battery life remains consistent with the Pixel Watch 4, typically offering 24-28 hours per charge. Impressively, the watch achieves a full charge in under 45 minutes.

While the design is aesthetically pleasing, its all-screen, bezel-less construction remains vulnerable to scratches. Google has enhanced heart rate and GPS accuracy, with GPS data undergoing cloud-based correction for improved results. However, some of the most anticipated features, like the Workout Builder, were not ready for testing at the time of review.

Google is expanding its health features under the Health Guardian umbrella, which includes emergency responses and long-term trend tracking for blood pressure and insulin resistance, though these require FDA clearance. The Pixel Watch 5 runs Wear OS 7, integrating seamlessly with the Android ecosystem. Nevertheless, its $50 price increase over the Pixel Watch 4 and the availability of similar health features on older models present a challenging value proposition.
