Pixel phones now act as Switch 2 webcams
6 Dec
Summary
- Google Pixel phones can now serve as webcams for the Switch 2.
- This functionality was enabled by a recent Android 14 update.
- The November Pixel Drop update resolved existing webcam mode issues.
Google Pixel devices can now be used as external webcams for the Switch 2 console, eliminating the need for a separate camera for GameChat video calls. This integration works directly between the devices without requiring any additional third-party applications.
The ability for Android devices to function as webcams was technically present since a quarterly update for Android 14, which introduced support for USB Video Class mode. However, this functionality was not compatible with the Switch 2 until the recent November Pixel Drop update.
Testing confirmed that the webcam feature became operational on the Switch 2 only after the November update was installed on a Pixel phone. The release notes for that firmware update also mentioned a fix for webcam mode issues, further solidifying this development.
