Pebble SDK Gets Apple Watch-like Complications
23 Oct
Summary
- Pebble SDK will gain plugins resembling Apple Watch complications.
- Plugins will offer more flexibility for smart rings and watches.
- New permissions system enhances security for Pebble users.

Pebble smartwatches are poised for an upgrade with a new plugin system being integrated into their SDK, drawing inspiration from Apple Watch complications. This development promises enhanced flexibility for developers.
Previously, watch face developers had to hard-code additional functionalities. The new system allows plugins, running locally within the Pebble app, to pull information from smartphone services and perform actions, such as adjusting smart home devices.
Core Devices' Index smart ring will also benefit, with users able to directly query plugins for information or actions, such as checking calendars or controlling locks. This local plugin approach is considered more secure than the current web-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration.
A new permission system is also being introduced, requiring Pebble owners to approve app and plugin access to location or internet. While plugins are currently in developer preview, this initiative signals a move to make the Pebble platform more capable.
