Many Major Services Still Don't Offer Passkey Security
25 Jun
Summary
- Passkeys offer superior security over passwords but aren't universal.
- A new website highlights major apps lacking passkey options.
- Companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft already support passkeys.

Passkeys represent a significant leap in account security, widely regarded as the gold standard. However, a recent analysis reveals that a quarter of major internet applications and services, including popular platforms like Instagram, Netflix, and Spotify, have yet to implement passkey support for user logins.
Scott Helme, a security researcher, launched whynopasskeys.com to actively encourage companies to embrace this technology. Passkeys enhance security by being generated on a user's device and tied to specific websites, utilizing biometrics or security keys for authentication. Unlike passwords, they eliminate the need for users to remember sensitive information and are far more resistant to phishing attacks, provided physical device access is maintained.
While tech giants such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft are recognized for offering passkey options, some services, like Instagram, present a mixed approach. Users can enable passkeys on Instagram, but only if their account is linked to a Facebook account that already has passkeys configured. Efforts to obtain comments from Meta, Netflix, and Spotify regarding their passkey implementation status are ongoing.
