PA Unveils Data Center Impact Map
1 Sep
Summary
- Pennsylvania launched an interactive map detailing 65 planned data center projects.
- The map tracks environmental impacts and permit status for each project.
- Northeast Pennsylvania has the largest cluster of data center developments.
Pennsylvania has introduced an interactive tool, the "Data Center Permit Tracker," to visualize the state's burgeoning data center industry and its environmental implications. This map, developed by the Department of Environmental Protection, currently outlines 65 proposed data center projects. Of these, 21 have reached the "confirmed" stage, indicating developers have applied for necessary permits related to air quality and water resources.
The majority of the projects, 44 in total, are categorized as "unconfirmed," meaning they have not yet submitted permit applications to the DEP. Notably, these developments are not uniformly distributed; Northeast Pennsylvania hosts the largest concentration of projects. One such project, Pennsylvania Digital 1 (PAX-1), is underway in Cumberland County, with additional unconfirmed projects planned near Harrisburg.
This initiative aligns with Governor Josh Shapiro's recent executive order, which enhanced regulations for data center developers. The Governor's Responsible Infrastructure Development initiative mandates that developers provide their own electricity and maintain transparency regarding their environmental protection plans. This measure aims to balance industrial growth with ecological stewardship.
