- This launch intensifies competition with Google Translate.

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Translate, a new webpage designed to convert text across 50 languages, positioning itself as a challenger to Google Translate. While the current iteration functions as a standard text-to-text translator, OpenAI signals future expansions, with mentions of voice and image translation capabilities expected to be added.
This launch arrives as Google continues to enhance its AI-powered translation features, including live translation headphones and new language learning tools, having added 110 languages in 2024. The field of AI-driven language translation saw significant advancements recently, with new devices offering real-time conversations between speakers of different languages showcased at CES 2026.
Currently, ChatGPT Translate mirrors functionalities already available within the ChatGPT chatbot. Upon translating text, users are presented with sample prompts to refine the translation, such as improving fluency or simplifying language for a child. Selecting these prompts leads to a ChatGPT conversation where advanced features like image uploads are accessible.
