14 Nov
Summary
- OpenAI begins testing group chat feature for ChatGPT
- Group chats can have up to 20 members, with profiles required
- ChatGPT can contribute to conversations and provide AI-powered responses

As of November 14th, 2025, OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has announced the beginning of tests for a new group chat feature. This new functionality will allow users to engage in conversations with up to 20 members, with each participant required to set up a profile that includes a name, username, and profile picture.
The group chats will leverage ChatGPT's latest GPT-5.1 Auto technology, enabling the AI to actively participate in the discussions. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT will "follow the flow of the conversation and decide when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the context of the group conversation." Users will be able to utilize ChatGPT's capabilities to assist with research and other tasks without having to switch to a separate tool.
While messages between group members will be free, users will need to use credits when directly asking ChatGPT for a response. The AI's access to different models will depend on whether the group members are free users or subscribers to ChatGPT's Go, Plus, or Pro tiers.
In addition to conversational capabilities, OpenAI has also given ChatGPT the ability to react to messages with emojis and reference group members' profile photos. The company is also exploring more granular controls around memories in group chats to ensure user privacy.
