NY's 10-Min Sky Taxi: JFK to Manhattan in Minutes

An electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Joby Aviation recently conducted test flights in New York City, showcasing a potential future for urban travel. These flights demonstrated the aircraft's capability to travel from JFK Airport to Manhattan in approximately 10 minutes, a journey that typically takes over an hour by car or public transport.

The aircraft is designed to be significantly quieter than helicopters, a key feature intended to address noise concerns from anti-helicopter advocacy groups. Joby Aviation emphasizes that its eVTOL is not a helicopter, utilizing six propellers that tilt for forward flight and wings for lift.

While airborne, the aircraft produces around 45 decibels, a stark contrast to the over 100 decibels of helicopters. However, it still generates noticeable noise during takeoff and landing, though less intense than traditional helicopters. The company highlights the environmental benefit of zero carbon emissions.

Joby Aviation is currently undergoing certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The test flights were restricted to over-water routes. The envisioned service is expected to cater to a premium market, with flight costs estimated to be comparable to a premium car service, likely exceeding $200 for a Manhattan to JFK trip.
