Nvidia Car Navigates San Jose Streets Autonomously
29 Mar
Summary
- Nvidia's Hyperion 8 technology achieved Level 2 autonomy during the test.
- The autonomous car successfully navigated complex urban scenarios with safety.
- The technology, not yet for sale, is expected to launch later in 2026.

Nvidia's advancements in autonomous driving were recently experienced on the streets of San Jose. During a 45-minute drive in a specially equipped Mercedes CLA, the Nvidia Hyperion 8 technology, operating at Level 2 autonomy, showcased its capabilities. The system, which requires driver interaction and monitoring, successfully managed various urban and suburban driving conditions.
The autonomous vehicle demonstrated impressive decision-making, including yielding to a bus pulling out unexpectedly and slowing for a pedestrian. It also anticipated turns and navigated intersections safely. A particularly notable instance involved the car braking effectively when a large truck reversed sharply across its lane.
The technology integrates 10 cameras and 5 radars, powered by Nvidia's Alpamayo stack trained on diverse data. While this specific setup is not yet commercially available, it is anticipated to be released later in 2026, signaling a significant step towards broader adoption of self-driving vehicles.
