- This breach could have granted access to millions of computer systems.

Hackers with ties to North Korea have infiltrated essential background software used for common online operations. This breach, identified on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, targeted the open-source program Axios. Axios connects various apps and web services, operating unseen in the background of numerous digital activities.
The attackers injected malicious software into an update for Axios, a tactic described as a supply chain attack. This method bypasses direct user interaction, allowing malware to spread through trusted software. The primary goal was to steal login information, which could facilitate further cyberattacks and data theft.
Cybersecurity researchers noted that the malicious code could infect macOS, Windows, and Linux systems, potentially reaching millions of users. Google linked the group, UNC1069, to this operation, stating they have targeted cryptocurrency and financial industries since at least 2018. North Korea is known to use such attacks to fund its weapons programs and evade sanctions.
