HMD, the company behind Nokia devices, is set to introduce advanced features to feature phones, aiming to bridge the digital divide. This initiative includes the integration of mobile payment capabilities, video calling, and AI-driven functionalities, targeting users who prefer simpler devices, particularly older individuals.
The company will first launch a digital wallet feature in India, enabling secure money transfers. This feature is designed for users who need to send funds to family members less familiar with traditional smartphones. Video calling will also become available, allowing users to connect with others via a front camera through the Xpress Chat app, which also supports text and image sharing.
Furthermore, HMD is integrating AI chatbots and voice command features into its feature phones. These capabilities will allow users to control settings and perform tasks using voice commands. A pilot program in partnership with inTouch will trial AI call services to provide companionship for seniors, addressing social isolation, though the effectiveness of AI companionship remains a point of caution.
