Nintendo Switch 2: Replaceable Batteries Coming to EU

Nintendo is set to release a new version of its Switch 2 console in the EU, featuring user-replaceable batteries for the first time. This significant development is in anticipation of the EU's Batteries Regulation, which mandates that manufacturers design devices with easily replaceable batteries starting in February 2027. This regulation aims to address environmental concerns.

Previously, Nintendo Switch users had to rely on authorized repair centers for battery malfunctions, with self-replacement attempts potentially voiding the warranty. The upcoming feature is expected to offer greater convenience, allowing for quick battery swaps, particularly useful for extended use like long flights.

The new capability will be gradually implemented for the Switch 2's detachable Joy-Con controllers sold within the EU. Details regarding its availability in North America or Japan remain unconfirmed. While some manufacturers have globally adopted changes in response to EU legislation, the rollout for other regions is uncertain.

In parallel, several US states have enacted 'right to repair' legislation, signaling a growing trend. Speculation also suggests other console makers might introduce similar features, with reports hinting at a potential PS5 controller battery update in November 2025. Consumer tech giant Apple has also begun incorporating replaceable batteries in recent flagship launches, such as the MacBook Neo.
