Startup Smashes Metal Powders for Advanced Materials
16 Jun
Summary
- New technique smashes metal powder particles together, bypassing melting.
- Startup pilots bespoke metals for automotive, aerospace, and defense sectors.
- Foundation Alloy raised $22 million Series A to scale production by 2027.

Traditional metal alloying methods, largely unchanged since the Bronze Age, involve melting and mixing metals. However, a startup named Foundation Alloy has pioneered a disruptive solid-state process.
This new technique utilizes specialized mills to repeatedly impact metal powder particles, fusing them into a new alloy without melting. This approach not only conserves energy, using approximately ten times less than conventional methods, but also enables the creation of alloys with superior properties.
Foundation Alloy's innovative process overcomes limitations of traditional melting, such as issues with metals having vastly different melting points. It allows for the development of materials that can withstand both high heat and mechanical stress, solving long-standing tradeoffs in material science.
The company is currently engaging with diverse industries, including automotive, aerospace, semiconductor, defense, and luxury goods manufacturers. These collaborations involve pilot programs to produce bespoke metals tailored to specific high-performance applications.
To accelerate its production capabilities and meet growing demand, Foundation Alloy announced a $22 million Series A funding round. The company aims to scale its output to several tons per week by 2027, with participation from various investors including Voyager Ventures, Trust Ventures, and Yamaha Motors.
