Nest Wifi Update: Google Defies US Router Ban Ahead of Time
30 Apr
Summary
- Nest Wifi router and point receive new firmware updates.
- US ban on foreign-made routers could limit consumer choices.
- Google Nest Wifi remains available for purchase currently.

Google is proceeding with firmware updates for its Nest Wifi router and Nest Wifi point, even as a US ban on routers manufactured outside the country looms. The Nest Wifi router is now running software version 14150.883.231, and the Nest Wifi point, which also functions as a Google Home speaker, is on version 1.56.3.497142. This marks the first update for the point since May 2025 and for the router since October 2024.
This move comes amidst concerns that the upcoming ban on foreign-made consumer-grade routers could significantly reduce options for US consumers. The majority of routers, including those from major tech companies, are produced overseas. This scarcity, combined with user demand, could pressure companies to increase domestic production or face limited availability.
Currently, the Nest Wifi router remains available for purchase. However, it is not considered among the best Wi-Fi routers, with top-rated alternatives like the TP-Link Deco BE63 and Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE98, as well as the Netgear Orbi 373, all being manufactured outside the US.
