NBN Co has experienced an unprecedented surge in customer upgrades since introducing new speed tiers four months ago, in mid-September 2025. Australians are ordering higher speed plans at the fastest rate ever recorded, with over 12,300 orders per week, a significant increase from the previous year's 8,200. This uptake highlights a strong customer demand for enhanced home internet capabilities.

The recent upgrades include boosting NBN 100 to NBN 500, NBN 250 to NBN 750, and enhancing existing NBN 1000 plans. NBN Co also launched a new NBN 2000 speed tier, promising theoretical download speeds of 2Gbps, which has garnered 9,500 orders despite limited provider availability. Data from the ACCC indicates customers on NBN 500 plans are achieving average speeds around 503.9 Mbps.

To access these faster speeds, customers require a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) connection. For those on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), a free fibre upgrade to FTTP is available, with NBN Co aiming to provide upgrade paths to all remaining FTTN premises by the end of 2030. Over 90% of the fixed-line network is now eligible for full fibre.
