Elon Musk: King of the Sky and Internet?

Elon Musk's Starlink constellation now numbers over 10,000 satellites, a glittering array that outshines traditional celestial observations. Launched by SpaceX starting in 2019, these satellites provide high-speed broadband to remote areas. The success is largely due to SpaceX's reusable rockets, which slashed launch costs by more than 90 percent.

SpaceX now accounts for 95 percent of US space launches and 50 percent globally. Musk, owning 40 percent of Starlink, has applied to launch up to a million more satellites for AI computing power. The user-friendly system uses small pizza-box-sized terminals to connect users to the internet.

Starlink's influence has yielded unprecedented geopolitical power for Musk. Its critical role in conflicts, especially Ukraine, demonstrates its ability to shape events. Ukraine relies on Starlink for troop coordination and drone control, significantly impacting its defense against Russia.

Russia also previously used Starlink, though Ukraine's recent "white list" policy has crippled their drone capabilities. This shift has aided Ukraine's territorial gains. Starlink has also been vital in Sudan, Iran, Venezuela, and Gaza for communication, humanitarian aid, and bypassing censorship.

Musk plans further expansion, including direct satellite-to-handset connectivity with StarlinkMobile. Despite concerns from traditional broadband providers about Starlink's aggressive expansion and cost-cutting, it is rapidly becoming a dominant force. Musk's long-term ambition for a million satellites depends on the development of the Starship rocket.

Concerns persist regarding light pollution from the reflective satellites and the sheer number altering the night sky. However, the US government's reliance on Musk's space ventures makes regulatory approval likely. The potential for Musk to wield immense power over global information exchange is a sobering prospect.
