1 May
Summary
- Musk testified in court regarding his lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman.
- He admitted AI companies commonly distill technology from rivals.
- Tesla has no current plans to pursue artificial general intelligence.

Elon Musk recently testified in federal court this week, facing scrutiny over his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. His statements on the stand offered a different perspective on his companies' artificial intelligence ambitions.
Musk previously claimed that artificial general intelligence (AGI) would be achieved soon, predicting breakthroughs by 2025 and potentially by 2026 with his company xAI. However, under cross-examination, Musk stated that Tesla currently has no plans to pursue AGI, despite Tesla's significant AI-related capital expenditures announced for 2026.
Furthermore, Musk's testimony addressed his public criticism of Anthropic for data theft. When asked if xAI had distilled technology from OpenAI, Musk indicated that "Generally, AI companies distill other AI companies," and partially confirmed xAI had done so, calling it "standard practice to use other AIs to validate your AI."
