Marques Brownlee's venture into the app market with his subscription wallpaper app, Panels, is coming to an end. The app will cease operations on December 31, having failed to cultivate a significant paying user base.
Launched in September 2024, Panels achieved over two million wallpaper downloads and topped the iOS App Store's Photos category. However, this popularity did not translate into a viable business, prompting the decision to close.
Concerns were also raised about Panels' initial data collection practices, which sought user location and personally identifying information. Despite attempts to address feedback, the app struggled to overcome its initial perception and a lack of a clear market.
