Mistral AI: Europe's Tech Darling or Misunderstood Giant?

Mistral AI, the French AI decacorn, is often misunderstood, diverging from the 'OpenAI of Europe' model. Instead, it emulates Palantir's strategy by utilizing forward-deployed engineers to assist governments and corporations in adopting AI tailored to their specific needs. This approach suits Mistral's financial standing, as it raises substantial funding while boasting rapid revenue growth.

In February, Mistral AI disclosed its annual recurring revenue exceeded $400 million, a significant leap from $20 million a year prior, and is projected to surpass $1 billion this year. The company is making substantial investments, including a €4 billion strategy to build data centers in France and Sweden, reflecting a commitment to AI sovereignty.

CEO Arthur Mensch articulates a vision for accessible AI, aiming to provide the best AI systems outside of centralized control. While not yet possessing the absolute best foundational models, Mistral is closing the gap and plans to release an open-weight model this summer. They also hold state-of-the-art solutions in domains like voice and vision processing.

Mistral AI's strategic moves include acquiring infrastructure startup Koyeb and investing in a significant European AI platform powered by Nvidia processors.
