21 Oct
Summary
- Fanless NAS supports five NVMe SSDs for up to 40TB storage.
- Features Intel's Core 3 processor with five cores and 4.3GHz boost.
- Combines 10GbE, 2.5GbE networking, and dual 40Gbps USB4 ports.
Minisforum has unveiled the S5, a fanless network-attached storage (NAS) system designed for silent operation and high-capacity storage. This innovative device integrates five NVMe SSD slots, capable of supporting a maximum of 40TB of solid-state storage. The S5 aims to provide significantly faster read speeds compared to traditional hard disk drives.
Powered by Intel's five-core Core 3 processor, which reaches boost speeds of up to 4.3GHz, the NAS also boasts robust connectivity options. It includes a 10GbE port, a 2.5GbE port, and two USB4 interfaces offering up to 40 Gbps transfer speeds. Heat dissipation is managed through passive cooling, utilizing heat pipes and cooling fins instead of fans.
The S5 is also equipped with an NPU capable of 15 TOPS for INT8 operations, enabling local AI applications. Minisforum suggests uses ranging from continuous background agents to managing shared creative files and household entertainment libraries. The bare-bones model is priced at $599, with users needing to purchase SSDs separately to reach the 40TB capacity, offering potential cost savings over preconfigured models.
