Microsoft Slashes Surface RAM, Boosts Prices
23 Jun
Summary
- New Surface models in 2026 feature 8GB RAM, half of previous standard.
- Microsoft increased prices on Surface devices released before 2026.
- 8GB Surface models may struggle with Windows 11 AI features.
Microsoft has released new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models in 2026 with significantly reduced RAM, featuring 8GB instead of the previous 16GB standard, at prices below $1,000. These devices are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus chips and 256GB of SSD storage. Previously, Microsoft had increased prices for its pre-2026 Surface devices that offered 16GB of RAM.
These cost-saving measures coincide with a global RAM pricing crisis, where AI data centers are consuming significant memory capacity. This has affected the entire PC market, forcing manufacturers to make concessions. Microsoft itself previously set 16GB as the standard for Windows 11 to support AI integrations, making these new 8GB models potentially incompatible with full Copilot+ certification.
The company is reportedly working to optimize Windows 11 for 8GB machines, possibly by disabling certain widgets to ensure smooth performance. This strategic shift aims to make Surface devices more accessible, though current configurations are seen as less competitive compared to other emerging low-cost PC options. Microsoft also launched higher-end models in the week prior to this report, starting at $1,600 with 16GB RAM.
