Microsoft Drops Copilot+ PC AI Exclusivity
7 Jun
Summary
- Microsoft shifts AI focus from exclusive hardware to broader device compatibility.
- Local AI features will no longer require specialized Copilot+ PC hardware.
- Future Windows AI will run on a wider range of devices, including older hardware.

Microsoft's strategy for AI on Windows is evolving, moving beyond the necessity of Copilot+ PC hardware. While initially promoting AI-first PCs, the company now aims for broader compatibility, allowing local AI agents to run on a wider array of devices, including new Nvidia-powered hardware. This shift was evident at Microsoft's recent Build conference, where the focus was on AI agents rather than exclusive NPU requirements.
Previously, many AI features, including the controversial Recall tool, were restricted to Copilot+ PCs equipped with NPUs. This excluded the majority of Windows 11 PCs. However, Microsoft is now developing smaller, more efficient AI models, like its Aion-1.0-Instruct language model, designed to run on less powerful GPUs and even CPUs.
The company's initial 16GB RAM requirement for Copilot+ PCs is also being re-evaluated, influenced by market pressures and the availability of more affordable hardware. This suggests that future AI features will be more inclusive, aiming to provide advanced capabilities to a broader user base without mandating expensive, specialized hardware. NPUs will remain beneficial for efficiency but will not be the sole pathway for AI functionality.
