Summary
- Meta is reducing VR support for Horizon Worlds, prioritizing mobile.
- Existing VR games will remain playable until June 15, 2026.
- The company invested billions in VR but now shifts focus to mobile and AI.

Meta is significantly altering its metaverse strategy by scaling back virtual reality support for Horizon Worlds, its flagship VR application. The platform, initially envisioned to popularize Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse concept, is transitioning to a mobile-only experience. Official communications indicated a complete phase-out of VR support, with the Horizon Worlds app scheduled for removal from Quest headsets after June 15, 2026.
However, Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, announced a partial reversal following user feedback, confirming that existing VR games will continue to function for current fans. This decision allows Meta to concentrate its resources on mobile development and the Meta Horizon Engine, recognizing that most user and creator activity already exists on mobile platforms.
This strategic adjustment follows Meta's substantial investment of tens of billions of dollars into VR over the past five years. Despite selling millions of VR headsets, the technology has not displaced smartphones or PCs, remaining primarily a gaming and entertainment peripheral. The company also noted that generative AI and chatbots have emerged as the next major tech trends, drawing Zuckerberg's attention.
Meta acknowledges missteps, with a recent executive admitting, "Sometimes, we knock it out of the park. Other times, we get things wrong." This pivot is also seen as a way to create more space for the Quest VR platform and the Worlds platform to grow independently. Despite these changes, Meta asserts its commitment to VR, continuing to be the largest investor in the industry and believing in its role in the future of computing, while also exploring augmented reality through its smart glasses.
