Meta Ends AI Performance Quotas, But Usage Surges
3 Sep
Summary
- Meta ditched AI usage metrics for performance reviews.
- Workers may no longer be penalized for not using AI tools.
- A new AI tool, Hatch, is reportedly increasing token consumption.

Meta has officially discontinued its incentive program that linked employee performance to the utilization of AI tools. Initially, workers were assessed on their "AI-driven impact," which involved evaluating their use of chatbots and agents. This approach led to designations like "AI Native" or "AI First."
New performance review guidelines have removed specific criteria such as "usage of AI" and "AI Native" designations. The updated guidance emphasizes that performance outcomes can be supported by AI "or other means," shifting the focus back to overall contributions regardless of the method.
Despite these changes, some Meta employees report that their token consumption is increasing as they test a new, advanced AI tool known as Hatch. This agentic AI can autonomously perform tasks like browsing the web and operating other applications.
Concerns regarding privacy and potential malfunctions have made some employees hesitant to connect Hatch to personal accounts. Previous company projects, including one that tracked employee keystrokes, have eroded trust. However, the elimination of performance pressure related to AI testing may improve morale and rebuild workforce trust.
While employees may no longer be aiming to maximize token usage, Hatch consumes more resources than older AI tools. Management still appears interested in employees demonstrating proficiency with AI tools. Some employees fear that increased productivity from tools like Hatch could lead to further job cuts, though Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that no further mass layoffs are expected this year.
