Summary
- Meta's AI chatbot is testing a shopping research feature.
- The tool suggests products with brand, website, and price info.
- This move rivals similar features from ChatGPT and Gemini.

Meta Platforms Inc. is introducing a shopping research feature into its artificial intelligence chatbot, aiming to rival similar tools from competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. This new functionality allows users to request product suggestions, which the chatbot presents with images, brand information, website links, and pricing. Currently, the feature is being tested with select users of the Meta AI web browser in the United States.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized the company's pursuit of "personal superintelligence," stating that new products will soon demonstrate Meta's capacity for highly personalized user experiences. The shopping tool reportedly tailors recommendations based on a user's inferred gender and location, as observed during testing where a "puffer jacket" request referenced the user's New York location and suggested women's options.
While users can click through to merchant sites for purchases, Meta's chatbot does not currently include checkout or payment functionalities. It remains unclear whether Meta receives referral commissions or if it prioritizes advertisers on its platforms. However, Zuckerberg indicated that future shopping tools will enable users to find specific products from Meta's catalog, suggesting a deeper integration of commerce into its AI offerings.
