Meta Platforms has acquired Moltbook, a social networking platform that was created for artificial intelligence agents. The co-founders of Moltbook, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, are expected to join Meta's Superintelligence Labs, a division focused on AI research, starting March 16. This acquisition underscores the intensifying competition among major technology companies to secure leading AI talent and innovative technologies.
Moltbook, which functions similarly to Reddit with AI bots as users, gained prominence rapidly since its launch in late January. The platform has become a focal point for discussions regarding the advancement of AI towards human-like intelligence. Despite some skepticism, such as from OpenAI's CEO, the underlying technology is viewed as a potential glimpse into the future of AI.
Concerns regarding Moltbook's security were raised by cybersecurity firm Wiz, which identified vulnerabilities exposing private messages and credentials. The issues were reportedly resolved after the firm alerted the site's owners. Schlicht, one of the co-founders, has previously highlighted "vibe coding," a method of building programs with AI assistance, stating he used his personal AI assistant, Clawd Clawderberg, to build Moltbook.
