Summary
- New working group forms to coordinate maritime intelligence efforts.
- Industry faces 'platform overload' from multiple data providers.
- Goal is to make maritime intelligence more accessible to commercial users.

A new working group focused on maritime intelligence is being established, bringing together satellite operators, analytics firms, government agencies, and academic institutions. This initiative arises from significant investment in maritime surveillance technologies and growing demand for monitoring illegal fishing, sanctions evasion, and commercial and naval activities.
The effort is led by maritime intelligence company SynMax and organized by the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation. Advances in commercial remote sensing, AI, and analytics have transformed the ability to monitor vast ocean areas, combining satellite imagery, radar, vessel tracking, and machine learning to understand vessel activities.
One primary goal is to tackle industry-wide challenges, particularly 'platform overload,' where customers must access information through numerous proprietary systems. This leads to frustration for government clients who must learn multiple interfaces. Greater standardization in presenting intelligence products and integrating diverse data sources is sought.
The group also aims to develop new business models to make maritime intelligence more accessible. Traditional pricing based on square kilometers is impractical for oceans. The initiative seeks to create economic models, such as subscriptions based on coverage areas, to allow broader customer experimentation with emerging datasets and expand the market beyond national security users to commercial maritime businesses.
