MapQuest has launched public transit directions, a significant feature for the 30-year-old navigation service. This update aims to meet the demands of millions who recently rediscovered the MapQuest brand. The new functionality is now accessible on the iOS and Android applications, with a web version planned for release shortly.
The service boasts support for almost 2,000 cities spanning 70 countries. Users can benefit from door-to-door trip planning, incorporating buses, trains, trams, and walking. Additionally, over 350 cities will receive real-time departure and delay information, alongside details on station access points.
This feature became a priority after MapQuest's decision not to rename Lake Ontario, an action that significantly boosted its user base. Many of these new and returning users expressed a need for transit directions, prompting the accelerated development of this critical functionality. MapQuest is also working on further enhancements, including Android Auto support and live navigation.
