M365 vs. Google: ROI Is Key
16 Sep
Summary
- Switching to Google Workspace may not save money.
- Many businesses switch out of spite, not ROI.
- Retraining costs can eliminate any potential savings.

New research from Gartner suggests that migrating from Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace does not yield significant financial savings for most businesses. Analyst Domenico Scriva observed that companies frequently switch platforms due to dissatisfaction with Microsoft, rather than conducting a thorough return on investment (ROI) assessment. He highlighted that higher-tier Microsoft 365 E5 plans include features like telephony and security licenses, which are not typically part of Google Workspace subscriptions. Even with Gemini included in Google plans and Copilot as an extra for Microsoft, the cost difference remains minimal, with Google sometimes being more expensive. However, Scriva noted that Google Workspace could prove more cost-effective for specific hardware, such as Macs and Chromebooks, which may influence hardware purchasing decisions. He cautioned that the substantial costs of retraining employees can quickly erase any projected ROI from such a transition. Gartner advises enterprises to prioritize specific business outcomes over reactive decisions. With the ongoing AI revolution set to transform software landscapes, businesses may benefit from delaying major software changes to better understand future industry directions.
